Read a Zillion Books with Jerry Pallotta

Some drafts of old posts turned up in my drafts folder. This one is from the summer of 2006! So, since I went to the trouble of writing them for my old blog, I thought I'd share it now.  

Oh wow! My kids and I were BLOWN AWAY by the presentation by author Jerry Pallotta today at the local library. 4th graders from the local elementary school and a preschool class attended, as well as at least 4 homeschool families.

My kids react:
"I thought he was funny. Everything he told us was funny! I like his books because they give you facts - a bunch of facts about the thing in the picture. I bought the Jet Alphabet book because I really like drawing jets and stuff like that. The thing that made me buy the book was a picture of a jet engine that is cut in half so you can see how it works." David, age 11

"I liked the part when he showed us all his books, especially Dory Story. I like that book because it's funny. The little boy was standing on a rock and he had his mouth open." Emily, age 9

"He put those fang things on that kid. That was funny! He put a kid in front of the screen and then the shark was going to eat him. That was
the funniest. I learned that he made all of those books!" James, age 6

A Big Yellow Hug, or Science Alive at the Library

Science Alive is a great program that our library usually hosts every summer. If you have the opportunity to go, I highly recommend it. Mr. Neill from Science Alive visited our library today and brought 5 exciting animals to share - chinchilla, tortoise, armadillo, anteater, and python. Everyone gets to look and touch the animals. Mr. Neill does a great interactive presentation with interesting facts and stories as he brings the animals around to each child.

Try-It Tuesday - Interlibrary Loan & Online Library Services

You know that book you've been wanting to read? The one your library doesn't own? The one you're not sure you want to spend the money on? Another library probably owns it. You can get it! Free! The answer is interlibrary loan.

Interlibrary loan allows you to borrow books (and sometimes other items, like DVD's) from other libraries with whom your library has agreements. You can usually search and reserve these online. Sometimes if the regular library co-operative doesn't own the item, my friendly librarian will find it from somewhere else for me.

We have borrowed a great number of library items this way. What fun it is to get the call from the library that they are holding an item for me! It also benefits the library by increasing their circulation numbers and they like that.

If you already use the online components of your library, you probably agree with me. If you haven't tried signing into your library system online, give it a try right away. Interlibrary loan is my favorite part of my library's online system, but it isn't the only one.

You can check your account to see what's due. You can renew your items online. Some libraries offer reference items or computer programs as part of their online offerings.

Online library systems are the icing on the cake. If you're not sure what your library offers, go check it out right now!
