1 - My foot still hurts (worse actually) so I can't get on the treadmill.
2 - eating healthfully
3 - dealing with irrational people

Successes:
1 - Completed 5 overtime hours this week - first time in a LONG time I've had the opportunity.
Can't think of anything else this week.....

Projects:
1 - getting the co-op schedule done WAY earlier than in past years
2 - tweaking the 4 week lesson plan for my essay class and getting the syllabus all printed out and stapled
3 - adding mid-season replacement players to the soccer teams

From the Library: season 2 of The Big Bang Theory & the next Mr. and Mrs. Darcy mystery

Redbox: Like Crazy (stupid story; would not recommend despite the excellent cast)

Kindle:  a Max Lucado book I am reading for devotions - I read a lot of Lucado years ago and am remembering now how much his books speak to me. Also reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (a library loan for the Kindle).
Rollicking: The Hunger Games on audio - I forgot how well-written and compelling it is! Completely enjoying my second read-through. Can't wait to see the movie with my book club!

Pondering: about summer and winter gasoline; never heard of that until this week! Googled so I know it's true, but how could I go so long without knowing about it?
Discussing: with David - psychopaths vs. sociopaths; with Emily - some blunt facts of life; with Bob - why doesn't the heater work in the van we are borrowing
Considering: the Pinterest debate over copyrights and wondering if that's why my Pinterest feed has slowed down considerably

Serendipity: a sweet note from my sister with a free coffee coupon (Thanks, Janet!)

Fun Times: went out with friends to dinner, then to see John Carter (which I enjoyed!) and then out for coffee

Anticipating: Jane Austen seminar/discussion with a friend on Sunday, SPRING!

Lisa's Logbook - March 4

Challenges:
1 - My left foot hurts when I run. Have been walking fast instead. :-(
2 - Gearing up for soccer season. Going to have to come up with Plan B to step out as registrar. Wouldn't you thinkthat, if you agreed to do a job and you changed your mind, then you would notify the person who is counting on you? Instead, this person is just ignoring my emails and calls, as well as those of the Commissioner.
3 -Coming up with appropriate consequences for misbehavior and bad attitudes. Especially for my teens. Going to make a point of finishing the Love & Logic book that I've had sitting here half-read for a few months.

Successes:
1 - Ran/walked fast on the treadmill 3 times this week.
2 - Passed our green belt test! (Will promote on March 12)
3 - Have a satisfying number of students enrolled in my essay class - Still room for a few more though!

Projects:
1 - March lesson sheets
2 - that yearbook!
3 - Planning the upcoming essay class

From the Library: The librarian offered us first dibs on the DVDs of Hugo and Puss in Boots. Also watched the entire first season of The Big Bang Theory on DVD.
Netflix: How I Met Your Mother and Jericho
Redbox: Breaking Dawn.....

Brit Lit: Introduced the class to the characters of The Scarlet Pimpernel.....

Recipes: Plan to make Glitter Grapes to take to Brit Lit movie night.
What's New: A 2012 Monet calendar (on clearance for 50 cents!)
On Order: a bootleg DVD copy of The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982). I own 2 VHS copies, but never ordered a DVD and now it's no longer available.

Disappointment: David was not chosen as a driver for his robotics team. At least not for the first competition.

Fun Times: My friend invited me to a ladies night at her church and it was fun! I even did the craft! And Emily and I (and Suzy) went out today for her birthday to see The Vow!

Anticipating: Brit Lit movie night, then going to see The Lorax with friends and our kids, going to see John Carter this weekend? (All my anticipation is for movies? LOL)

Writing Progress: Wrote a little more FAQ for my Jane Austen book club guide.

Lisa's Logbook - February 25

Challenges:
1 - Parenting - every day something new, plus the same-old same-old
2 - Keeping my temper (ok, just being real here....)
3 - I think the guy who was supposed to take over for me as Registrar is going to flake out and not do it.

Successes:
1 - Completed our green belt testing! Now we are ADVANCED students. Oh my.
2 - Got all the Wordsmith papers graded.
3 - Have a good number of students registered for the essay class I will be teaching beginning mid-March.

Projects:
1 - Working on getting the co-op schedule done. Almost there!
2 - Planning my next essay class
3 - Starting my 2012 Mixbook - going to scrap as the year goes along so I don't forget the details. Going to do a 2011 Mixbook as well.

From the Library: interloaned the first season of The Big Bang Theory - about halfway through watching it. Sometimes I laugh out loud!
Netflix: Watched a production of Shakespeare's Richard III - starring Ian McKellen, Annette Bening, Robert Downey, Jr., and Kristin Scott Thomas. Really good and boy, Richard III was a scoundrel!
Brit Lit: Finished The Scarlet Pimpernel (which I have read before), and am starting El Dorado (a sequel).

Recipes: Sticky Bun Breakfast Ring (found, of course, on Pinterest)
What's New: Bought a purse last week at Goodwill (brand new, with tags, bigger than my old one, with a shoulder strap and lots of compartments. LOVE IT!) Also found a neoprene envelope that fits my Kindle with its book light installed - 99 cents! YAY!

Serendipity: Driving back and forth to robotics with David gives us lots of time to chat - at least when he's not napping. lol

Disappointment: Dreamcoat was sold out on the day we hoped to go. :-(

Fun Times: Got to go to a movie (This Means War) and for dinner with a couple wonderful ladies last weekend.

Anticipating: MARCH - I hate February.

Writing Progress: again, nothing.....

Lisa's Logbook - February 19

Two weeks have passed since I posted the logbook. Last weekend was filled with sisterly activities and no time online!

Challenges:
1 - The numbers on the scale are going the WRONG WAY.
2 - Wondering if my registrar replacement is flaking out on me - need to find out this week what's going on with him and get that all squared away.

Successes:
1 - Decided NOT to teach at co-op next year. Another step on the road to fewer commitments.
2 - Friday was co-op and girls' night out. I usually eat pizza at co-op and something fattening at Applebee's. Instead, I had salad with chicken and raspberry vinegar for lunch and tilapia for dinner. Stayed within my calories!

Projects:
1 - Helping to get the SOF yearbook done
2 - Going to get those boxes out of here. I'm not gonna sell that stuff, am I?

From the Library: Carrie Bebris' Mansfield Park mystery featuring Mr. and Mrs. Darcy, a book on managing chronic pain, and still trying to finish CS Lewis' book on literary criticism
Redbox: Snagged Anonymous to watch tonight

Netflix: Have been watching old episodes of How I Met Your Mother
Brit Lit: Finished A Study in Scarlet (a re-read) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and am starting a re-read of The Scarlet Pimpernel - both are books I am teaching to a group of homeschoolers
Rollicked: The Turn of the Screw (with Colin Firth & Jodhi May); also the new release of The Tempest starring Helen Mirren, Russell Brand and an array of other skilled actors

Recipes: Had Emily bake some tasty chocolate peppermint cupcakes from The Butch Bakery Cookbook - yummy!

What's New: Made a clothes run to Goodwill - all purple tag clothes were $1! YAY!

Serendipity: found my missing pair of wool socks (in my pajama drawer)

Disappointment: I don't get to go see Van Halen at the Palace Monday night. :-(

Fun Times: Fifteen ladies at book club - can you imagine? GOOD TIMES!  Also got to have a sleepover with my good friend!

Anticipating: Karate testing, seeing Dreamcoat

Writing Progress: Once again, that's a big FAT zero.

A Look at February's Lessons

Bible - Our hymn for Bible this month is Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. We'll be completing Volume 2 of Bible Study Guide for All Ages this month. (It's our second time going through this series.) We are currently reading 1 Peter and we'll continue on to 2 Peter, 1 John, Jude, and Revelation. That should take us through to the end of the month. I keep meaning to add in some Bible memory, but it is one of the things that always slips off the list.

Language Arts - Literature - David and Emily are reading A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which is the first of 4 Sherlock Holmes novels. Conan Doyle also wrote 56 short stories about Sherlock Holmes and they will be reading two of those. Chapter summaries will be completed for each of the 14 chapters in the novel. They are also writing an essay as culmination of our study of The Count of Monte Cristo and they'll be gathering with their co-op class to watch the film of that book and have a discussion of the differences between the novel and its film adaptation.

James is finishing up Tom Sawyer and will move on to The Summer of the Monkeys, which was written by the author of Where the Red Fern Grows, Wilson Rawls. He'll be doing some different comprehension and language arts activities instead of writing chapter summaries for this book.

Language Arts - Other
Suzy is reading the A Beka Book Aesop's Fables and doing much better than I anticipated. Her frustration is very high but her skill is better than I had imagined. She can't STAND not being able to do something well. She is also still working in the Pyramid book to learn skills for multi-syllabic words. When she finishes, I will have her do that section over for mastery. She is also working in Explode the Code online. I realized she has not been signing in as much as she should, so I will redouble my efforts to make sure she does that daily.

David and Emily are reviewing some comma skills with this website. James is working on alphabetization with Alphabetter. Suzy and James are studying Spelling Power daily and working on typing and penmanship a couple times a week.

James and Emily are taking my Wordsmith writing class with a group of other students and they are covering writing descriptions of people and places this month.

All the kids are writing once a week in their communication journals, which I love doing with them! They are also still working on editing their NaNoWriMo novels, with the goal of being done by the end of the month.

Math - David continues with Teaching Textbooks Algebra 2. I bought him a scientific calculator which has helped him greatly. Right now he is working on graphing first degree equations with two variables. He is working independently to master the material. Sometimes I wonder if he should be receiving more actual instruction, but he seems to be thriving on the independent study method.

Emily is doing remedial math and has proven that she knows her math facts - a huge relief to me!

James finished Teaching Textbooks 6 and I borrowed a copy of TT7 that he has begun. I noticed he was working on Roman numerals.

Suzy is doing Teaching Textbooks 4. She is on Disc 3 of 4 and is working on division.

History - David and Emily continue with their study of the modern age - focusing on the 1960's this month. I think I need to get a little more focused on what they're doing, since I think they're only managing the bare minimum (and Emily may not even be doing that much).

Emily, James and Suzy continue with their Michigan History class once a week, which they are enjoying greatly.

Science - David's physics topics this month mainly consist of Thermal Physics and Static Electricity. Of course, he is getting a TON of hands-on electrical and programming work at First Robotics League. He is there five or six days a week.

Emily dislikes teaching the younger two their science topics. They're not very co-operative, but I make her do it anyway. It's good for all of them. In Considering God's Creation, they are covering trees and insects and beginning the classification of animals.

Other
David is still working on his online ACT prep course through Kaplan in anticipation of taking the test in April (or possibly June). He is also taking a Government class through co-op and he has assignments sometimes for that class as well.

Emily and James are taking the Red Cross Babysitting class through co-op, so in April, they will have their Babysitting cards. I have volunteered Emily to work with a local mom of 4 young children so she can get some hands-on practice.

We skipped Art class this month, but the kids participate in Sketch Tuesday each week (though lately we have not been sharing ours online).

Lisa's Logbook - February 4

Challenges:
1 - I have no working printer. Thankfully the library is nearby.
2 - The vehicles are still giving us trouble.Thankfully one is running ok.
3 - Life is getting hectic. Time to work out is hard to come by. But I am determined. And thankfully, the treadmill is working well!
Successes:
1 - Finally finished The Count of Monte Cristo! Whew, that took a long time and we were reading the ABRIDGED version!
2 - Am all caught up on grading papers!
3 - Went all week without candy

Projects:
1 - Making denim Christmas stockings - I've cut out six of them.
2 - TAXES
3 - getting at least one of my finished books e-published for Kindle

From the Library: Francine Rivers' Mark of the Lion trilogy on CD - have wanted to re-read this for several years now.
Redbox: Grabbed the new release Drive to watch tonight
Netflix: Discovered a TV series called Jericho; I also caved and watched a couple more episodes of Glee Season 2. Oh, and From Prada to Nada was entertaining! (a modern Californian/Hispanic version of Sense and Sensibility)
Rollicking: The Turn of the Screw by Henry James - oooh, creepy!

Recipes: James and I created a potato-white bean soup that was SO GOOD! Probably because we put a pint of heavy cream in it. lol

What's New: a red enamel-lined stock pot to replace my old one-handled pot. It's bigger too! Also a new plunger. When you need one, you REALLY need one.

On Order: a new cord for the soccer laptop. The old one has to be positioned JUST RIGHT or it won't charge.

Serendipity: found out that one of the local high schools fixes vehicles for a $10 lab fee and the cost of parts.
Disappointment: Found out that the problem with my Voyager is beyond the skills of the local high school auto mechanics class (and probably also of my husband)
Obsession: feeling a Jericho obsession coming on - self-limited it by telling myself I can only watch while running on the treadmill!
Fun Times: hung out with my friend for an afternoon working on the yearbook - difficult projects are more fun with a friend (and SHE is in charge - not me! lol)

Anticipating: Brit Lit Movie Night on Monday and then Sister Weekend!
Writing Progress: Did a bit of research into e-publishing via Kindle

2 - The vehicles are giving us trouble - 2/3 are inoperable right now. And the other one is having some battery issues.
3 - Perfecting my karate form WITH POWER, and also the other things we need to know for our test in one month
Successes:
1 - Weigh-in Wednesday showed 11.6 lbs down in 3 weeks
2 - Finally got the Regency Ball portraits displayed! Not exactly how I wanted, but at least they're up instead of in a stack in the hutch, right?
3 -  Finished the Daniel Fast!

Projects:
1 - Making denim Christmas stockings - I've cut out six of them.
2 - Getting my Mixbook album done for 2010
3 - getting at least one of my finished books e-published for Kindle

On My KindleCraving God: A 21-Day Devotional Challenge by Lysa Terkeurst
Netflix: finished up the second season of Parenthood
Theater: One for the Money (based on Evanovich's book) - liked it!

Recipes: I made some good chili and Suzy made some delicious cornbread. I think it was so good because we used butter in it instead of oil like my other recipe calls for.
What's New: Bought David a cell phone since he's gone so much lately. Got a great deal on a Net10 phone at Kmart. He has 4 months of service and after that, he'll be on his own with paying for it.

Serendipity: The poems composed by my writing class were quite good, on the whole!
Obsession: PINTEREST! (I swore I wouldn't get sucked in. But now, I don't remember why. It's so wonderful! lol)
Fun Times: Book club was wonderful! Two days later, I got together with two good friends for dinner and a DVD and some discussion. :-) And last night, I got together with 7 other ladies for a movie and dinner out. When it rains, it pours!

Anticipating: Sister Weekend!
Writing Progress: oh, never mind. :-)

Daniel Fast Report

Today is the last day of my three-week-long Daniel Fast. You can read my longer post explaining it here, but basically the fast entails eating only vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and nuts and drinking only water. No sweeteners are allowed on this fast. No yeast either, though I was a bit looser with that interpretation.

Giving up caffeine was not as difficult as I thought. Usually I drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day and most days I also have a can of Diet Coke. The only other beverage I usually drink is water. I went cold turkey on the caffeine - just stopped drinking it on Day 1. That day was fine. Day 2 I had a headache, though not debilitating. The rest of the 1st week, I suffered from some fatigue. But after that I was fine. I drank a lot of water during the fast and in the mornings when I normally would have had coffee, I replaced it with hot water with a lemon slice. I found that I missed having the warm mug to hand since it's so cold out. Probably in summer, I would have been fine without that.

What did I eat?

Breakfast every day was a piece of Ezekiel bread (sprouted whole grain) with a tablespoon of natural peanut butter (no sugar) and a tablespoon or so of natural fruit jam (again, no sugar).  Ezekiel bread does have yeast, but this was pretty much the only yeast I consumed.

Lunch and dinner I ate something separate from the rest of the family. This took a lot of extra time for me because my kids usually make the meals and I didn't think it was really fair to ask them to make something separate for me.

Common meals for me were oven-fried sweet potato strips, soups (canned and homemade), whole grain pasta with spaghetti sauce (no sugar), brown rice with veggies and chili. A couple times I had corn tortillas with refried beans and salsa. I only had one stinker of a meal - some expensive wild rice/odd grains mix.

Some special situations included dining out a couple times, hanging out with friends, and book club.

Book Club is known for its deliciously abundant potluck, especially the desserts. I brought something I knew I could eat (vegetarian chili and a big fruit salad) and another friend mentioned she'd have something I could eat (couscous with veggies). I only ate one other thing there and it was a bit of a departure from the Daniel fast - whole wheat scones. They had no sugar, but I did eat lemon curd on them.

I took the kids to lunch one day at Wendy's when we were running errands. I had a boring lunch of plain baked potato and plain salad. If I had been a TEENSY bit more prepared, I could have brought along some salsa to adorn the potato. I never bothered to find any dressings that would work on the fast, though there are some. I just ate all my greens plain the whole time, with one exception.

Friends wanted to go out to dinner during the middle of the fast. They knew I was participating but I didn't want to miss out on a relationship-building time in order to stick to the fast strictly. We went for Thai food. I had vegetarian pineapple fried rice. Since I didn't cook it, I was not sure what was in it, but I asked for no eggs and no meat. The rice was white, which was again a bit of a departure, but it was so far from what I would normally order when dining out, that I thought it was a good compromise. I ate the leftovers for lunch the next day.

Hanging out with friends one night to watch a movie presented another challenge. Usually these evenings involve chocolate! LOL They made kettle corn, which I declined. I brought grapes and natural potato chips, which were good munchies. I also brought hummus and some whole grain crackers (Kashi) but we didn't even need those.

Along with the fast I participated in the 30 Day Nissan Innovation for Endurance Challenge which included 3 strength training workouts and 3 cardio workouts each week.

And the weight loss report? I lost 11.6 lbs in 3 weeks!

I plan to go out to eat on Wednesday!! And have something TASTY with CHEESE! And a Diet Coke! And some COFFEE with FLAVORED CREAMER! :-) :-)

Lisa's Logbook - January 20

Challenges:
1 - Innovation for Endurance 30 Day Challenge (30 days of activity - today is Day 20)
2 - Doing the Daniel Fast for 3 weeks (am on Day 17)
3 - Perfecting my karate form WITH POWER
Successes:
1 - Weigh-in Wednesday showed 8.2 lbs down in two weeks
2 - Got the Brit Lit essays and the Wordsmith book reviews graded and returned
3 - Sorted through all the upstairs books and have a huge pile of books to get rid of.
Projects:
1 - Getting rid of those books! lol

2 - Finding a deal on a new laptop
3 - Helped the girls clean up their room - wow, THAT was a project!

From the Library: The Art of Reading DVD course (The Great Courses) - I am halfway through listening to the 24 lectures.
On My Kindle:  one of the Lord John books by Diana Gabaldon (borrowed from the library!)
Netflix: a little Parenthood (one while I was on the treadmill!)
Redbox: Cowboys and Aliens (Liked it! Especially Daniel Craig in cowboy gear!), and Midnight in Paris (sweet movie!)
Recipes: Made myself some vegetable rice soup with a couple cans of vegetable broth, some leftover brown rice and some leftover stirfry veggies - YUMMY! I have enough left for one more meal.
What's New: a couple medium size bowls that are painted like my really large Italian ones

Serendipity: Suzy and James had the opportunity to spend an afternoon with their dear friends who moved to Texas a year and a half ago. They were in heaven!
Difficult Decision: Had to decide whether or not to hold the high school essay writing class since I only had about half the target enrollment. Waffled on it for days. Finally decided to cancel it.
Fun Times: went out for Thai food with friends on the spur of the moment. First time eating Thai and I ate vegetarian pineapple fried rice. (Because it was white rice, it was not QUITE in line with the Daniel fast, but I thought it was better to go and enjoy my friends than to stay home and eat my legalistic food. :-)
Anticipating: BOOK CLUB! This month is Persuasion!
Writing Progress: Disappointed to report there is no writing progress. I'm not Superwoman, you know! :-)

Daniel Fast

So for some reason I felt like I needed to do something drastic this month with my eating. December consisted of feast after feast. And the scale reflected it. The book I've been reading on prayer has made me think more and more about my faith as a living breathing way to relate to God. But I don't want to give you the wrong impression. I'm doing this fast to be healthier. The spiritual benefits are present, but this is incidental.

A cleanse was my first thought, but I've never done it and didn't really know where to start or if it would do what I wanted. I'd heard about the Daniel fast and it just felt like the right thing to do.

Basically it's eating like Daniel did in Babylonian captivity when he didn't want to eat the foods from the king's table. I assume the foods were mostly non-kosher. But he said he and the other Hebrew boys would eat vegetables and water and be healthier than the rest of the captives. The word used for vegetables evidently means foods grown from seed, which would include all fruits, all vegetables and all grains.

So that's basically the limits of the Daniel fast - fruits, veggies, whole grains, and only water to drink. No sweeteners, no meat, no dairy, no eggs, no added chemicals. NO CAFFEINE. lol

I have followed it rather closely. The main exception is that I've included some yeast that is not allowed in the strictest interpretation of the Daniel Fast. I also have done my best to read labels but I don't want it to become A Huge Thing.

I'm anticipating a few questions, so here are my answers to those. If you have other questions, let me know.

So what have I been eating?
For breakfast every day, I have 1 slice of toasted Ezekiel bread with natural peanut butter and all-fruit jam.
My other meals are mostly soups or rice and beans or whole grain pasta with tomato sauce. I make a big batch of whatever it is and eat it until it's gone. I only had one unpalatable meal thus far. I eat several fruits every day and a couple veggies at each meal. Also sweet potatoes! YUM!

I found a few snacks that have worked well for me - a certain rice crisp chip I found at Meijer that has no sugar (most snacks have sugar! even when you wouldn't expect it), popcorn made with olive oil and sea salt, rice crackers. I like to have crunchy snacks. When I need something sweet, I go for fruit. I've treated myself to some fruits I don't often buy out of season, like blueberries. And for some reason, Meijer has had blackberries (in pints?) 2 for $1 for a couple months.

Am I hungry all the time?
No. Believe it or not, that's a NO! In fact tonight, I worked through dinner and I wasn't starving. I just skipped it. I never skipped meals before.

How hard was it to go off caffeine?
The first day was no problem. The next several days were harder - headache and fatigue. But now I'm good. I drink hot water with lemon in the AM because I like having the warm mug. I am not sleeping any more than I was before either - still about 6 hours a night during the week.

And I've already lost almost 8 pounds in the 12 days I've been doing the fast! Admittedly, I have also upped my exercise. I'm following the Nissan Innovation for Endurance 30 Day Challenge - 3 strength training sessions and 3 cardio sessions per week.

I plan to fast for 21 days total, so I will finish on January 24th. Just 9 more days.
