1:00 – 2:00 Basic Composition (60 min.)
ages 10-15
Lapeer Free Methodist Church
1621 N. Saginaw St., Lapeer

This year I am offering two IEW method classes – a basic class and an advanced class.  Since the IEW method focuses on both structure and style, students will gain and retain essential writing skills while learning to make their writing shine! Both classes will cover all nine IEW units and all of the regular stylistic techniques.  Daily homework is required.  These classes require a year-long commitment.

The basic class is designed for students ages 10-15 who have never done IEW writing before or who need more practice in using the stylistic techniques.  If your older student struggles with writing, this is the class to choose! The basic class will have shorter assignments and an unhurried pace.  If you are unsure if this class is a good fit, contact me at lisaquing@gmail.com or 810-796-2768 to discuss placement.

Using the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) method, students will work on basic composition skills, including reports, essays, creative writing, summaries, and note-taking. They will learn concrete methods and practical tools for writing excellence.

This class is easily adaptable to a wide range of abilities. No prior IEW experience is necessary. Students are expected to be able to compose a basic sentence before beginning class. Students will write poems, stories, reports, critiques, essays, and a mini research paper. Students will master basic paragraph structure and learn to compose a five-paragraph essay. Creative writing and non-fiction writing will both be taught.  Each student will work at his or her own level and will progress at an individual pace. Daily homework is required.

This class will meet on 24 Thursdays from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at Lapeer Free Methodist Church.

HOMEWORK WILL BE REQUIRED EVERY WEEK; plan to spend between 2-3 hours on writing homework each week.
