Advanced Composition Class (Lapeer)

2:15 – 3:30  Advanced Composition (75 min.)
Ages 13-19
Lapeer Free Methodist Church
1621 N. Saginaw St., Lapeer

This year I am offering two IEW method classes – a basic class and an advanced class.  Since the IEW method focuses on both structure and style, students will gain and retain essential writing skills while learning to make their writing shine! Both classes will cover all nine IEW units and all of the regular stylistic techniques.  Daily homework is required.  These classes require a year-long commitment.

The advanced composition class will be for students ages 13+ who have a strong understanding of the IEW method or are already competent at writing. The advanced class will go at a quicker pace, the assignments will be longer, and more advanced stylistic techniques will be taught. If you are unsure if this class is a good fit, contact me at lisaquing@gmail.com or 810-796-2768 to discuss placement.

Using the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) method, students will focus on composition skills, including reports, essays, creative writing, summaries, and note-taking. They will learn concrete methods and practical tools for writing excellence.

In this advanced class, the basic IEW skills will be reviewed and advanced skills will be taught. Students will develop more advanced writing skills such as thesis statements, summaries, persuasive essays, research papers, and more. Creative writing and non-fiction writing will both be taught. Students will master basic essay structure and learn to compose longer essays and research papers.

Students must be at least age 13 by the first day of class. Students who already have mastered the basic skills will be challenged with extra assignments and advanced stylistic techniques. Each student will work at his or her own level and will progress at an individual pace. Daily homework is required.

This class will be on Thursdays from 2:15-3:30 PM at Lapeer Free Methodist Church.
HOMEWORK WILL BE REQUIRED EVERY WEEK; plan to spend between 2-4 hours on writing homework each week.
