College success depends on excellent composition skills. Does your high school student know the correct format for essay writing? Can he or she compose a coherent and effective essay? Does your child have the necessary skills to write the research papers that will be required in college? Have you considered that cover letters and resumes also require skillful writing?

This academic writing class for grades 9-12 is offered in three distinct segments. Each segment stands alone and can be registered for separately. The first segment will teach basic essay structure and writing a timed essay. Segment Two will focus on advanced essay skills, covering many types of essays and how to improve essay writing. The third segment will cover research writing. Together, the three segments of this class can fulfill the composition portion of any high school English class. (A complete high school English class will include both composition and literature study, as well as oral language and vocabulary study.) HOMEWORK WILL BE REQUIRED EVERY WEEK. Students may take one, two, or three academic writing segments.

Basic Essay (4 weeks -  September 17, 24, October 1, 8)

This practical and fast-paced workshop for high school students will teach the basics of persuasive essay writing. Students will learn to quickly construct a basic five paragraph essay and use valid arguments to prove a thesis. Learning to write a timed essay will be a major focus of this class to better prepare students for taking standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT, as well as other timed essays such as in college entrance exams and job applications. Learning to write a fast first draft is also of prime importance for college success. Quality, in-depth, personalized feedback will be provided so that students can improve their writing. Students will also learn how to self-evaluate their writing.
Note: The instructor will assume that all students are able to compose a coherent sentence. Previous essay writing experience is not necessary.

Research Writing (12 weeks - Oct 15, 29, Nov 5 12, 19, Dec 3, 10, 17 Jan 7, 14, 21, Feb 4)
$125 (due on October 15 - may divide into two payments; second payment due December 3)
Students will explore the process of academic research from the pre-writing stage to the revision stage. This class will walk students through the planning, development, and composition of a research report, step by step. Students will learn how to plan, develop, draft, and revise a research paper, as well as properly research the topic and document the facts. Students will end the class prepared to write reports and research papers for high school and college assignments.  This class is recommended for all high school students at least once during their high school career, Students will benefit from repeating this class more than once in high school to ensure that the research and writing process is mastered.  This is not a "learn to write" class. Students must already be able to write a coherent paragraph. Students will need to bring a laptop to several class sessions. Students must have access to a printer.

Advanced Essay (8 weeks - Feb 11, 18, March 3, 10, 17, Apr 7, 14, 28)
$100 (due on February 11)
Is your goal a strong effective essay? Are you ready to move beyond the basic 5 paragraph essay? This workshop will elaborate on advanced essay writing techniques that will enable you to compose several types of engaging and meaningful essays, including literary analysis, expository, and comparison/contrast, as well as essays for scholarships and college applications. Topics will include strengthening the introduction & conclusion, addressing counter-arguments, evaluating the implications of the issue, and word choice. Additional skills will be targeted to each student's needs. Revision techniques will also be covered. Quality, in-depth, personalized feedback will be provided so that students can improve their writing. Students will also learn how to self-evaluate their writing.
Note: The instructor will assume that all students have mastered the basic five paragraph essay format.

Class fees are NON-refundable even if you drop the class. I do not offer refunds under any circumstances. I will work with you on a payment plan if necessary, but I will rely on you to follow through on your agreement to pay since these classes pay my bills.  At least 8 students must enroll to ensure the class will be held. A maximum of 20 students will be accepted.      

Students must be in high school (9th-12th grades) to take this class. Daily homework is required.

This class will be on Thursdays from 11:30 AM - 12:50 PM at Lapeer Free Methodist Church.
HOMEWORK WILL BE REQUIRED EVERY WEEK; plan to spend between 2-4 hours on writing homework each week.
